Prismatic Parallel

Prismatic Parallel is a grid-like drawing that explores the idea of another reality unlike our own that bends the space of what we know as our everyday and what we experience every day. Taking everyday objects like earphones, chairs, teapots, the artwork displays a transformation of fictionalizing the ordinary into a fantastical version that cannot exist in our everyday and also uses color, patterning, and repetition as a way to emphasize the overwhelming power of what humans can remember, see, and create into one large drawing.

Desperation

Desperation is one of two pieces of a currently developing series of artworks of the “Restart” collection that touches on the idea of reincarnation and how it could be an escape from a past that is too happy or too sad to return too. While the concept of reincarnation follows a more positive light, the drawing articulates other variations of the concept of rebirth and restarting a new life with acknowledgement that there is a previous life already lived. The piece emphasizes a life or soul’s desperate need to survive and escape the previous reincarnations and lives lived in order to gain peace and enlightenment or even to forget. Using an overwhelming amount of space, color, repetition, and layering, the accumulation building upward follows the path in which one would take to survive out of pure desperate need than want.

Trace

Trace is a simple drawing of layering and accumulation, anticipating based on a previous action and building up spaces of color and patterns onto one surface. The drawing is inspired by architecture, and how history has built its sculptures, homes, castles, and such throughout the world and as time occurs has lost it to human and natural causes. But in history these remnants of time, efforts, and life always leave behind a bit of themselves for others to remember, whether it be by a story, record, photo, or memory, the record of remembering and seeing its last life is but a trace of history for people to find, thus the drawing uses traces of my history as an artist and builds it together and connects the pieces in order for the traces to become one large remnant of time as an artist through using linework’s and patterning’s I once cherished and used in my previous works.

Kate Yeungee Oh (작가 오연지) is a Korean multimedia artist based in Painesville, Ohio who graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Kent State University in 2024. Born in Ohio at December 30th, 2002, Yeungee grew up with a love for learning new things, especially in the artistic field. She was first introduced to the art of origami where she learned about the beautiful story about how folding a thousand cranes could grant her a wish and the fascinating method of folding paper into artistic creatures. She folded her thousand cranes developed an everyday love of learning how she could use art to translate her fantastical ideas of reality into a visual masterpiece that could be enjoyed by everyone. Going to Kent State University for art, Yeungee hoped to both grow her passion of art into a professional career as well as explore other interests in her life because she believes that everyday must be lived to its fullest experience and effort, which involved her many interests like swimming, drawing, cooking, reading, folding, and watching films which all played into her artistic ideas overtime. Yeungee experimented a lot with different fields of art as well as studied the values of culture in art, taking inspiration from her Korean background throughout her research into pattern, Surrealist, and architectural art. Much of her work displays fine linework and repetition of color and patterns which she uses to highlight how the time and effort of one simple idea can transform into a complex journey. Yeungee also experiments with different topics like simplicity, reality, stories, and space, where she creates drawings that are abstracted and colorful, utilizing mediums like ink, markers, gouache, pencil, and paint to deliver a sense of overwhelming spontaneuity. As an emerging artist, Yeungee’s artistic goal is to continue creating art that displays her chaotic and wild perspective of stories in an abstracted and surrealist manner while also making a name for herself in the art world.
