Bryan Duong Milstead

sun-kissed reunion

and so we meet again.
embrace me in your whimsical waltz
as I acclimate to its ever-changing tempo.
when you gracefully gild the finest particles of
my worldly being, also awaken my sanity,
lest it has been paralyzed by the scornful mockery
of a bitter Boreas.

here in this verdant pasture,
I feel you run your fingers
through my hair. they’re adorned with
crimson-colored gemstones and golden rings;
perhaps the magnum opus of a divine jeweler
with creativity and craft that lasts an eternity.

the zephyr sways alongside us and
whispers mellifluous melodies in my ears.
nearby songbirds begin to delicately harmonize
and I rejoice, for we are no longer obligated
to dance in silence. I celebrate, for I’ve been liberated
from the horrid violence that pierced my skin with icicles,
and suffocated my heart with a blanket of snow

a bed of flowers is much kinder to my soul.

I notice how each one stares at you in
utter awe, uniquely cherishing your presence.
not even the most severe snowstorm could
obscure the depth of your radiance.

and you subdue the disorientations of my mind
with multicolored affirmations that metamorphose

into beautiful bronze butterflies.
you crown me with an aureole;
recollections of my halcyon days,

eradications of my Stygian nightmares.

may we swear an oath to never leave each other’s side,

in which we will walk through infernos of ice together
and mourn for barren oak trees.

(finally!)

(silly me for going offbeat)
(couldn’t find it anywhere...)

(the grass stains my jeans)

(something i could never afford...)
(before the universe ceases to exist?)

(in a key im unfamiliar with.)

(released from an ice-block prison)
(you’ve come to melt it away!)

(with an earthy scent of nostalgia)
(incandescent, fiery, and fervent)
(you’ve lived millions of lifetimes...)

(invisible to the naked eye)

(with even better days to come)

(‘til death do us part?)
(leaves of dignity stripped away...)
